�The term cybernetics has its etymological roots in the Greek word kybern, meaning �to steer� or �to pilot� (McHoul, 1998). It was a term that referred to maritime navigation and has obvious connotations to control and to movement through space by means of technology (ships, rigging, oars, etc.). In the 1940s, Norbert Wiener, an engineer, mathematician, philosopher of Logic and scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) utilised the word to prefix the term cybernetics, a school of thought he pioneered. Cybernetics, for Wiener, was a theory of both control and communication through flows of information. Fundamental to cybernetic theory was the claim that it applied equally to humans and machines. Feedback mechanism were a central link to this working in practice. Information feedback, Wiener hypothesised, would generate automatic processes between the human and the machine.�
